School of Mechanical Engineering (SME) is one of the oldest and strongest schools of Jiangsu University. The school offers more than 10 degree programs and has 4 undergraduate majors which are Mechanical Designing and Manufacturing Automation, Mechatronic Engineering, Measurement and Control Technology and Instrument, Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering. SME has the first level doctoral degree discipline authorization and post-doctorate research station in Mechanical Engineering. In addition, SME has three second level doctoral degree discipline authorization in Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation, Mechanical Design and Theory, Mechatronic Engineering, and six master’s degree discipline authorization in Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation, Mechatronic Engineering, Mechanical Design and Theory, Measurement Technology and Instrument, Precision Instrument and Machinery, Optical Engineering, and three engineering master’s discipline authorization in Mechanical Engineering, Instrument Engineering, Optical Engineering. Among them, Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation is the cultivating National Key Discipline and Mechanical Engineering is cultivating by Jiangsu Province to be a National Key Discipline. Mechanical Designing and Manufacturing Automation is the cultivating National Distinctive Program and Brand Program of Jiangsu Province. Mechatronic Engineering, Detection and Control Technologies and Instruments are the Distinctive Programs of Jiangsu Province.
Now SME has more than 170 staff including more than 40 professors (more than 20Ph.D. supervisors) and more than 50 associate professors. More than 90 percent of the staff have master’s or doctor’s degree. There are more than 1500 full-time undergraduate students, and more than 600 graduate students. SME has established cooperative relationships in teaching and research with universities from United States, Japan, Germany, Canada and other countries, including University of Manchester, Florida State University, Northern Illinois University, Purdue University, Wilfrid Laurier University.
SME established two provincial key laboratories which are “Photon Manufacturing Science and Technology” and “Material Tribology”. Besides, SME has one key lab in laser shock processing technology and other 18 research institutes (centers) such as Institute of Laser Technology, Micro-Nanometer Science & Technology, etc. SME has focused on laser processing and detection technology, micro electro mechanical system, precision processing technology, computer aided design and manufacturing, industrial robot, and mould technology for many years and has a batch of high level outputs. In recent years, SME has undertaken more than 100 national projects such as “863”high-tech projects and national natural science foundations. SME was awarded one first prize, two second prize of National Science and Technology Progress and one second prize of National Technology Invention and 30 other awards from Jiangsu Province and Ministries. SME has published more than 1600 academic papers, among which, 600 papers are cited by SCI, EI and ISTP. More than 300 invention patents have been authorized in last three years.
SME has established an Industrial Center which provides service of experiments, practice, engineering training. The software and hardware of the center are in the top level of the country. Students of SME have got many outstanding achievements in all kinds of competitions such as “Challenge Cup” National College Student Curricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition, National Contest of engineering training for comprehensive abilities for College Students , Engineering Colleges Advanced Manufacturing Technology Innovation Making Games, Mechanical Innovative Design Competition. Graduates of SME are universally welcomed in society and the rate of graduate employment stays above 98% for many years.
