Research interests

Liquid-Assisted Laser Micromachining. Laser technology is widely used in field of material processing due to its advantage of supplying high energy intensity into a small irradiated area to heat, melt and vaporize the target material. However, the thermal damage typified by heat affected zone (HAZ) is always inevitable in the thermal laser-material interaction process, resulting in the decreased reliability and functionality of the final products. Assisted water can be introduced into the laser machining process in forms of flowing water layer or waterjet to help constrain HAZ and minimize thermal damage. In this way, the removed material can be flowed away effectively and efficiently by the water, and the spatter spots on the target surface can be avoided. Meanwhile, the interactions between water, target material and laser beam become more complicated and need to be explored.

Micromachining by Combining ECM and Laser Technology. Laser machining always results in residual stress and thermal damage layers on the ablated surface, whereas these deficiencies can be avoided in ECM. By combining these two technologies, micro-structures without thermal damage and residual stress may be fabricated efficiently. I will focus on this area in the following stage.
